AI Characters and Conversational Chat

Character.AI’s central experience revolves around AI Characters. Users can discover Characters created by the community or create their own. Character.AI has introduced expanded memory capabilities to help Characters maintain important information during longer conversations.

Story Memory allows users to preserve important events, backstory and moments from a conversation. The platform also provides automatically captured Facts relating to the user, Characters and other participants in a story. Memory Usage provides visibility into the information being retained.

Voice and Character Calls

Lorebook

Lorebook is a newer world-building feature designed for creators who want Characters to understand larger fictional universes.

A Lorebook can contain information about locations, side Characters, objects, events, factions and world rules. Entries are associated with keywords and become available to Characters when relevant terms appear during a conversation.

A single Lorebook can be linked to multiple Characters, helping maintain consistency across a shared fictional world.

c.ai Books

c.ai Books turns selected classic literature into interactive AI experiences. Users can enter the world of a book, interact with its Characters and participate in the story.

Users can play as existing Characters or use their own Persona, follow the original story through a book-arc mode, or go off-script and role-play freely. Alternate-universe remixes also allow stories to be reimagined in completely different settings or genres.

Creator Community

Character.AI is not only a chatbot service but also a creator platform. Users can build Characters, stories and worlds and share them with the community.
