Microsoft Copilot – AI Chatbot, Writing & Productivity Assistant

Microsoft Copilot provides a conversational AI experience that can answer questions, help users create content, summarize information and assist with everyday tasks. It can use web information to provide current answers and can adapt its responses to different types of requests. Microsoft’s current consumer Copilot also includes Smart mode, which can automatically determine when a request needs a faster response or deeper reasoning.

Copilot supports image creation through Copilot Imagine, allowing users to create images from natural-language descriptions and work with different visual styles. Image-related capabilities and usage limits vary according to the user’s account and subscription.

Copilot Voice allows users to communicate with Copilot using natural speech. Microsoft states that Copilot Voice supports conversations in more than 50 languages, making it useful for hands-free questions, brainstorming, learning and everyday assistance.

Copilot Vision allows Copilot to understand visual information that the user chooses to share. Depending on the device and environment, it can analyze a screen, website, application or camera view and provide contextual explanations and suggestions. Vision is designed to observe and explain rather than independently control the user’s computer.

Copilot can also work with uploaded files. Users can provide PDFs, Word documents and spreadsheets and ask Copilot to explain, summarize or analyze their contents.

Copilot Pages provides a workspace for developing and refining AI-generated content. Users can use it to organize ideas, write, edit and collaborate with AI-generated material.

For research, Microsoft provides research-oriented capabilities within Copilot. The consumer Deep Research feature was retired from the Copilot app in August 2026, while Microsoft 365 Premium users can continue to create detailed reports and analyses through Researcher in Copilot.

Copilot also provides visual responses, combining text with relevant images, videos and information cards for certain types of queries. It can assist with topics such as travel, shopping, sports, dining and general information discovery.

For Microsoft 365 users, Copilot becomes substantially more integrated with workplace productivity. Depending on the subscription and license, Copilot can work within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Microsoft Teams, helping users draft documents, analyze information, create presentations, summarize communications and work with business data.

Microsoft also provides Copilot agents and automation capabilities for organizations. Through Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio, businesses can create and use agents to assist with specific workflows, tasks and business processes.

Microsoft’s Copilot ecosystem therefore extends beyond a conventional chatbot and includes conversational AI, content creation, multimodal interaction, productivity assistance, business intelligence and AI-powered agents.
